Home Interior Upgrades to Make Your Space More Pet-Friendly

White Dog on Sofa

Pets are a joy to have, but can be a handful sometimes. Still, whatever inconveniences they may come with don't stop sixty-seven percent of all US households from owning a pet. Pet owners have easily decided that the companionship and good health that pets bring to the home are worth the trouble they can sometimes cause. Still, it wouldn't hurt to apply some clever redesigning of your home's interior to make your job as a pet owner a little less tiring and more welcoming for your pup.

Design and Build "Pet Stations" in Your House's Rooms

Dogs and other animal friends need to bathe and eat just like us, and it would be better for both pet and owner if the process were organized and efficient. Next time you think about remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, think about your canine companion's place in that space, and design and build accordingly. Customizations such as pet stations are one of the trending home remodeling commissions in the US, according to building firm, Mangum. A pet feeding area in the kitchen, complete with its own cabinets for storing food, a faucet for refilling water bowls, and ample space for your pets to enjoy their meals would be a great way to keep feeding time organized and time-efficient. You can even cordon it off from the rest of the kitchen with a dog fence so that Fido can still have his dinner while you're making some for yourself and your family.

As for the bathroom, walk-in showers work wonders for easily bathing your dog, especially if they've gotten particularly muddy after a play session. As with the kitchen, installing cabinets and drawers for bath supplies would be a great idea, as well as handheld showerheads for easier rinsing.

Invest in Fur-Proof Furniture and Upholstery

If you let your furry friend run around the house, it's probably best to own furniture that doesn't attract their hairy leftovers. Fabrics such as velour and velvet are notorious for magnetizing hair, leaving pet owners with a little extra cleanup on their hands. Not to mention, more delicate fabrics such as silk are highly likely to be damaged in a household where a highly mobile pet runs freely. Furniture that comes upholstered with smooth, strong fabrics such as synthetic fiber and higher-quality textiles are far less likely to catch hair shedding, so aim for those if you're looking to buy new furniture. For those who can't or won't replace their existing furniture, going to a good leather upholstery service will be your best bet.

Pets provide a warming company that humans just can't match sometimes, but they can come at the price of care and feeding, and sometimes more than you bargained for with the former. Luckily, with a fix here and a tweak there, it doesn't have to be all that difficult.
